Kandy Dalada Maligawa

The Sacred Temple of the Tooth

Nestled in the heart of Kandy, surrounded by misty hills and the tranquil waters of Kandy Lake, the Dalada Maligawa stands as one of Sri Lanka’s most sacred and historically revered sites. This temple, known in English as the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, is the guardian of a priceless treasure, a tooth relic of Lord Buddha.

The relic is not only a deeply spiritual symbol for Buddhists but also a representation of sovereignty in Sri Lanka. Throughout history, it was believed that whoever held possession of the Tooth Relic had the divine right to rule the island. As a result, the relic has journeyed through kingdoms, guarded and venerated, and finally enshrined in Kandy during the Kandyan era.

The Dalada Maligawa is more than a monument—it is a living temple, a place where the past and present meet in spiritual harmony. Visitors from around the world come not just to witness its beauty, but to feel the deep reverence that has protected the Sacred Tooth for generations.

Built within the royal palace complex, the Dalada Maligawa is a magnificent structure that reflects the craftsmanship of Kandyan architecture. Intricate wood carvings, gold-plated roofs, and painted frescoes adorn its halls. The temple is richly adorned, yet exudes a tranquil and meditative atmosphere. The Paththirippuwa, or octagonal pavilion, and the inner sanctum where the relic is kept, attract thousands of pilgrims daily.

Every year, the temple becomes the center of the Esala Perahera, a grand procession held to honor the relic. This cultural and religious spectacle features hundreds of traditional dancers, drummers, and richly decorated elephants, symbolizing centuries of heritage.
